It's not vital, but Vitalogy is a worthy addition to your Pearl Jam collection (Vitalogy - Pearl Jam)

Advantages: Betterman, Cordurory, Last Exit Disadvantages: Stupidmop, Aye Davanita After the mass commercial successes of 'Ten' and 'Vs', a more raw sounding, introspective band evolved with the release of 'Vitalogy'. Fighting battles with Ticketmaster hardened the band's strong anti corporate stance, doing little to promote the album, instead preferring to let the music do the talking. Opener 'Last Exit' is a hard and fast rocker, in keeping with the theme of many of the band's albums, coming to an abrupt finish when the listener least expects it. The mood is maintained through 'Spin the Black Circle', famously misinterepreted as a song about drugs, and 'Not for You', before mellower tracks arrive. 'Nothingman' and live favourites 'Corduroy' and 'Betterman'. 'Bugs'....is just bizarre, and needs to be heard! 'Stupidmop' on the other hand should be left well alone, pretend the album closes with 'Immortality' instead and you have yourself a far more satisfying conclusion. Not their best, but another solid Pearl Jam album. The artwork in the accompanying booklet is fantastic too, beginning the band's foray into better than average packaging for their releases. Summary: The start of a less commercial period in Pearl Jam's history |
