Advantages: Some blinding moments of pure hate and rock
Disadvantages: The filler are tracks border on annoying and go way past pointless
Named after a book Eddie found one day Vitalogy is a love it or hate album. The album covers lots of topics but I will always remember it as Kurt's album.
As much as a fued between Nirvana and PJ was evident, the death of the Nirvana singer had obviously hit Eddie and the band hard and a lot of this shows up through out the album.
A lot of the songs contain direct references to Kurt, he is hate of fame and even the scene where he was found. Immortality mentioned "scrawls his own, cigar box on the floor" a reference to Kurt's suicide scene. As well as the more obvious 3 days maybe longer, and the song name Last Exit and No for You.
This album also sees the band hitting out at the music press and all that comes with it. Starting off with a mild subject of the death of vinyl (which also loaded with references to heroin addiction), Pry To and then Corduroy (named so due to the fact one US chain store picked up on Eddies recent appearances in a Corduroy jacket that he paid $5 from a junk store, they then copied the design and sold it for $70).
The downside of this CD is quite odd fillers in there with the worst case being Stupidmop, this is an odd mix of music over the voice of someone from a mental institute giving an interview.
Even with all the angst and hate on this CD there's still time for some classic Pearl Jam soft moments, with Nothing Man and Better Man, the last of which was written by Eddie long before the band formed.
This is a good album but a lot more work than the two before it. As a side note this was the start of the Pearl Jam cardboard CD sleeves and contained some nice bits to read from the original 100 year old Vutalogy book.
Summary: The difficult 3rd album was almost great
