I've got into a habit of browsing Amazon to check out new music (new music to me, that is, rather than new music per se) and recently came across Beverley Knight's greatest hits CD, Voice. Beverley Knight, a soul singer from Wolverhampton, has been around for over a decade but isn't hugely well known. This compilation, released in 2006 to mark 10 years in the music business, contains 11 top 40 hits. I knew I liked the song Shoulda Woulda Coulda, but reading through the tracklist, I recognised several songs I also liked that I hadn't realised were by Beverley, such as Come As You Are and Made It Back. I decided to purchase this CD as I felt pretty certain I would like it.
1. Shoulda Woulda Coulda
This is one of Beverley Knight's most famous songs, a soulful, relaxed, reflective track that is incredibly catchy.
2. Keep This Fire Burning
When I first listened to this album I was racking my brains to try to figure out where I'd heard this before. Then I realised - it was on Swedish singer Robyn's self-titled album. The song was actually Beverley's first, and her version is very laid-back and poppy, in contrast to Robyn's dance-orientated version.
3. Come As You Are
This track is uplifting and summery, with a bit of a rock edge, showing another side to Beverley's talents.
4. Piece of My Heart
A cover of the soul classic, Beverley shows off her stunning vocals in this great song.
Another soulful effort, this track isn't as immediately catchy as some of the others but it's a real grower.
6. Made It Back [Good Times 7" Mix]
Another song that was familiar to me, though I didn't know it was actually by Beverley until quite recently. This is a catchy, soulful track included here in both the original and remix forms.
7. Get Up!
This track has a bit of a hip-hop flavour, another varied style for the album.
8. Flavour of the Old School
This is the song which marked Beverley's entrance into the music scene in 1995. It does have a bit of a 90s sound to it, but it doesn't sound particularly dated.
9. Sista Sista
Violins add atmosphere to this relaxed, soulful track.
10. Not Too Late for Love
Another uplifting track, with a soulful sound.
11. Greatest Day
An optimistic, life-affirming song with a catchy melody.
12. Made It Back
The older version of Made It Back, which sounds dated compared to the other, but is still a good song.
13. Sweet Thing [Live]
The first of two live tracks that prove how stunning a singer Beverley Knight is.
14. Angels [Live]
A cover of the Robbie Williams hit, this is a fantastic version of the classic song.
15. Who's Gonna Save Your Soul
A quieter, more reflective track to end the album with.
This is a great album and is currently available from Amazon for only £2.99. Beverley Knight has a fantastic voice and the varied selection of tracks on this album really showcase it. I really believe she deserves more recognition as she is a fantastic singer with some fabulous songs.
