Advantages: Versatiltiy and Variety within the Album, Still Maintains the Classic Slipknot Brutality
Disadvantages: May Scare Small Chidren (In Places) lol
Firstly, without predecessing my opinion with any introduction, I'd just like to say I think this is an AWESOME ALBUM.
Not just an awesome metal album but this album has, in my mind, brought slipknot to a different level of musicality.
I use the word "different" because I don't think the album has heightened their ability as a band to produce cracking and crushing metal tunes but has more expanded the varitey in their sound.
This album is likely to silence any critics that claimed "Slipknot are just noise" (A statement which infuses me anger at the general ignorance of it) because the band seem to have deliberately made an effort to escape the possibility of being put under this kind of ignorant criticism yet have still maintained their brutality and trademark sound. In addition this album brings with it the grammy award winning single: "Before I forget" which showcases all the mentioned slipknot trademarks aswell as awesome lyric hooks from the man Corey taylor to create a catchy yet brilliantly heavy beast.
The album will also not disappoint fans of the previous album's tracks such as the groundbreaking "Wait and Bleed" with tunes such as "The Blister Exists" (probably my favourite track on the album with a ridiculously cool drum riff solo which to a freakin' sweet climax), "Duality (Which has a very similar feel to "Wait and Bleed" because of it's main open string muted chugged drum driven riffage) and "Pulse of the Maggots" (Boasting arguably the most catchy riff on the album with a philosophical vocal intro leading to the heavy climax).
Songs that showcase Slipknot's definite progression musically blatantly includes: "Vermillion" (A cleverly worked low tempo (by slipknot standards) atmospheric riff build up throughout which continues to lyrical melodic choruses aswell as heavy interludes edging more towards the "Doom Metal" genre and also a tasty wah drenched yet fitting solo which compliments the energy and passion within this powerful and by all means brave track), and "Circle" (Would you believe it a wholey Acoustic track which appears to step far away from the expected sound of trademark Slipknot yet this track most definitely suits the mood of this album. Corey's lyircs are melodic, catchy and memorable to create a dark atmospheric yet highly accessible song, even to likes of Jack Johnson listeners - yes seriously - and it's melancholy tone will leave the listener chilled yet bewildered lol)
Anyone who's criticised Slipnot's musicality beforehand should buy this album and I hope will have their eyes opened by Slipknot's change in approach to songwriting.
Yet all fans, be not worried by these words, all the brutality and slipknot trademarks are still there and at a new strength!
Summary: An Essential to Nearly all forms of Metal's Fans

- 21/08/08 I thought it was better than the rubbish they produced earlier, but not by much. |
