Advantages: Seattle "grunge"at its finest., Eddies angst-ridden vocals.
Disadvantages: None.
Pearl Jam appeared in the early nineties from the remnants of Mother Love Bone and Green River. They were quickly lumped into the "grunge" category and left to fend against such acts as Nirvana, Soundgarden and Alice In Chains. Their first album Ten was highly acclaimed and is still one of the biggest selling albums in the world today. This was there supposedly "difficult" second album, as they attempted to revive the hype of their first album. Tracks. ------- ----Go---- The first single off this albums stumbles into life. It is a rant about somebody who is suicidal, with Eddie shouting out "Don't go on me!!!” Although this was way before Kurt decided to let go, it was often linked after the event. Brilliant track with plenty of anger and guitars. Yes!! ----Animal---- A song about people that steal from other people in the streets. "I'd rather be with an animal" is the rousing call from Eddie as he vocalises his dislike of these thugs. Again, this is a rousing rant that really gets your back up. ----Daughter---- A slower track with plenty of acoustic guitars, to give an atmospheric edge to a story about an abused child. “She holds the hand that holds her down". ----Glorified G---- A track about Eddies hate for guns. "Got a gun, 'fact I got 2, that's ok man cause I love god" is an attack at the people who think it is fine to own a gun, just in case. Brilliant chorus with a fantastic guitar riff and in your face drumming make this a favourite. ----Dissident---- Amazing intro into the third single. Slows into a story about a woman who sold her man because she couldn't keep quiet about his wrong doings. A song again full of feeling from our Mr. Vedder. ----WMA---- A percussion run track that screams out about police brutality towards american b
lacks. "Police stopped a brother again" is the scream from Eddie that suggests that we may have found another issue he is not altogether pleased with. ----Blood---- A very punky track this one. With a hard riff, and Eddie screaming his lungs out. Short, but oh so sweet. ----Rearviewmirror---- A fantastic riff runs throughout this track. This really is a song to drive along to. Really catchy chorus will have you singing/humming along for days. It is a song about reflecting on the bad things that have happened to you. ----Rats---- Comparing humans to rats, and coming out with the conclusion that rats are a lot better behaved, what a concept. This slightly bluesy feeling track is definitely a favourite, with a chorus you'll just love. ----Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town---- A slow track that talks of meeting with somebody you haven't seen for years, and barely remember. Beautiful vocals from Eddie, mixed with acoustic guitars make this a very nice little number. (even if it has got one of the longest titles ever!) ----Leash---- Singing about friends and youth, enough to make anyone angry (well Eddie at least). A very catchy little tune with plenty on offer. And, a fantastic run up to.... ----Indifference---- As is always the case with Pearl Jam, they save the most atmospheric track for last. A slow track with Eddie crooning over the lyrics. "How much difference does it make?", maybe a little reflection on how his ranting and raving really effects the whole scheme of things. A beautiful tearjerker track. So, I think they pulled off the second album very well. A bit more angst-ridden than its predecessor, but just as rocking and tune filled. Pearl Jam are not widely recognised in the UK and I believe that this has been their only downfall over the years. This stuff SHOULD be heard.
