Advantages: Calypso I party music

Disadvantages: Waiting for Cousteau far far far too long

Well, I've been a fan of Jarre basically since 1976 when Oxygene first came out, and have always liked what Jean-Michel came up with each time.

On this album released in 1990, it has a very carribean feel to it, but with the trademark Jarre synths.

The intro track Calypso I is the main moving track on this one. Great 8 minutes of synth from Jarre I've heard in a long time. It's very much a sort of party track on this one, either giving you a lift, or making you wanna dance (if you're that way inclined).

Calypso II is in contrast more moody, very much as if the setting was underwater and you're exploring reefs, very much like Cousteau.

Calypso III is very much a sort of ballade sort of song, very soulful, you'd have to listen to it to make your own mind up on what it means for you. For me, I felt like I was flying in terms of mood. No, no drugs taken at that time.

All three Calypso songs features a steel band to a large degree. Jarre has this thing that wherever the album is set he tries to incorporate some of the local musical tradition.

Now there is a fourth track on this disk, and it's called Waiting for Cousteau. On the vinyl version it's 22mins long. "How long?" I hear you ask. But wait, the CD version goes on for nearly 46minutes. "WHAT?" I hear you cry. I've never got a full explanation about this track, but to me it feels like it has a very fractal mood to it, in that there were a set sequence of samples and they were programmed by computer to randomly regenerate themselves over 46 minutes. I can't believe Jarre would sit down and write this to last 46 minutes.

To sum up, Calypso I, party track, Calypso II, Calypso III, ballade, Waiting for Cousteau, relaxing music or possible cure for insomnia.

Well worth having a listen if you get the chance, but when compared with other albums, you're better off getting one o
f his earlier albums.

Some of the earlier music seems to have more order on the album, and also his synths he had in 70s early 80s were more analogue and thus had a more deeper sound.

Sound advice, I guess, but with nothing to back it up. Why should we get an earlier album? What makes them better?
