Want One - Rufus Wainwright

Premium Review I Want One (1207 words)
by funkimunki - written on 07/01/09 (Very useful, 76 readings)
Rating:

Want One is the third album release from Rufus Wainwright and it was my first introduction to him back in 2005. I had actually been given a free concert to see him so bought the album so I knew what I would be singing along too! As it turned out, it wasn t really a sing along concert! Rufus Wainwright is the son of Loudon Wainwright III, a famous American songwriter, folk singer, humorist (he was the resident singer with Jasper Carrot in the 1980 s show, Carrot Confidential) and actor (he played Captain Spalding in M*A*S*H). Rufus sister, Martha, is also a singer/songwriter as is his mother, Kate Garrigle, so there is a clear love of music in the family! Rufus has a ...

Premium Review Grand - in every sense of the word (337 words)
by Midrange - written on 10/09/08 (Very useful, 26 readings)
Rating:

"Want One" is the first half of American singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright s "Want" album. From start to finish, this album dazzles and delights. It is, at times, monstrously extravangant (check out the fully orchestrated rock-opera-style "14th Street"), marvellously adventurous (see "I Don t Know What It Is" - tales of life, travel, parents, heaven and hell) and heart-achingly beautiful (try "Dinner at Eight") Indeed, "Dinner at Eight" was described by the League of Gentlemen s Reece Shearsmith as one of the finest songs he had ever heard. It tells of Rufus s relationship with his father, also a master ...

Premium Review Gay but worth it :) (582 words)
by phill@leeds - written on 31/07/02 (Very useful, 253 readings)
Rating:

heard of him? But then is popularity a measure of how many people like you, or is it how much people like you? If it is the second type then Rufus is certainly an admired fella. Here he has produced an aching beautiful, ultra camp journey through music, incorporating Counting Crows’ piano splendor, Jeff Buckley soaring vocals and waltzing cadenced prose. The album begins and ends with the superb ‘Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk’ an intriguing song of his own fragility. In typical Wainwright style, the lyrics rise and fall with the orchestra like a boat on the ocean. Rufus leads, with the piano, banjo, cello, drums and viola driving the song forward ...

Excellent songwrting, strong performances, studio recording captures the "feel" of the songs "Cannonball" seems to pale to insignifance alongside some of the other tracks

Folk - Irish Folk - 2003

deep, great voice, good lyrics I like his first album better

Great songs, A couple of weaker links

The Rack - Asphyx
A different take on death metal, from the genre's classic period. Thrash sections don't incorporate as well, and poor production is sometimes an issue.

Shooting At The Moon - Kevin Ayers
Arthur Brown style strangeness works well. Extensive improvisational jams are rubbish.

Second Wind - Brian Auger
Jazz-rock fusion for fans, with talented performances from Auger. Confused direction, and tedious.

Regeneration - Ascension Theory
Less grandiose space metal for the faint-hearted. No character of its own.

Occasus - Amenta
Talented industrial death metal. Too mechanized and inhuman.

November - Azure Ray
Pleasant background music. Nothing much to it.

Lost In Space: Vol. 1 - Tobias Sammet's Avantasia
Tobias Sammet still has a great voice, and fans of power ballads will likely find something to enjoy Lack of power metal, and what is present isn't very good.

Deleted Scenes From The Transition Hospital - Axis Of Perdition
Effective and unique atmosphere, with a nicely depressive metal performance coming almost as a bonus Long-winded and difficult to listen to, in numerous respects.

Contaminated - Atrocity
Skilled grindcore with satisfying death metal elements. Songs were previously available in a more definitive form.

Beyond Good And Evil - Atma
Consistent and hypnotic psychedelic trance. Disappointingly repetitive, without much variation as promised.
