War, from 1983, was U2's third album following October and Boy from 1980 and 1981 respectively. It was also their first number one. At the time, they hadn't really had any big chart hits in the UK and were also concentrating on breaking themselves in America. The U2 of 1983 are a very different proposition to the corporate-friendly, iPod monkeys of 2005. This album is rawly produced and performed with political lyrics ranging from topics as diverse as the Bloody Sunday attrocity to the plight of third world political prisoners. Here I am reviewing the vinyl version of the album. War is the U2 album that features the close-up of the scab-lipped boy with his ... Read the complete review

These last few years have been difficult and dark days to live through due to the events of September 11 2001, Al Queda (Sp), the hunt for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and more recently the car bombs going off in Istanbul. There were monts in the past few years due to the efforts of Bush, Blair and Hussein that World War 3 would ensue and destroy this planet. It is a terrifying thing to think about. I am sitting hear writing this review listening to U2?s third studio album War released in 1983. What do you get if you mix pseudo politics, young men and a generous helping of edgy guitar work (hey what about that snow!)? Well it's quite simple really, these are the ingredients that make up another fantastic U2 album. War established U2 in America and spawned the hugely successful 'Under a Blood Red Sky' at Red Rocks live album. At this stage in their career U2 could hardly put a foot wrong and their music was so engulfing it needed to be witnessed in a live setting to be truly appreciated. Opening track 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' caused a huge stir because of its Northern Ireland theme. Larry Mullen's opening drum salvo and the ... Read the complete review

Less pop oriented, varied songs, interesting music and lyrics. good production.
Some will find it a bit too emo. Only a few brilliant songs

More fun heavy metal disguised as death metal.
Over-the-top, daft and dull in places.
The Wombats Proudly Present... A Guide To Love, Loss And Desperation - Wombats
Brilliant Debut album
Has a few songs that let the album down
The Final Experiment - Ayreon
Ambitious and enthusiastic rock opera for sci-fi/fantasy fans.
Confusing moral message, some really bad lyrics and some boring songs.
Revelation - Armored Saint
Solid modern heavy metal with good vocals.
Doesn't recapture the old spirit.
Minutes To Midnight - Linkin Park
Great CD, lots of great songs on it
not exactly what linkin park fans are used to
Evil Is Forever - Astral Doors
An improvement with further power metal influence and epic songs done properly.
Hammond organ and other hard rock throwbacks.
Anthems Of Rebellion - Arch Enemy
Angrier and more powerful direction, losing the rubbish TV game show guitars.
Stands out less as a result.
Actual Fantasy - Ayreon
Approachable Ayreon without the flamboyance.
Less distinctive and exciting as a result.
01011001 - Ayreon
Interesting concept and some enjoyable prog metal for Ayreon fans.
Feels like a derivative step backwards, and constrained by concept.
