Advantages: Some catchy tunes

Disadvantages: A lot softer than before

Green Day's album Warning is where they began to be accused of "selling out" and simply churning out tosh. I don't like the term, and whilst this perhaps isn't as good as Dookie, it's still a solid album that's maybe a little more refined and less punky but it's still got some great songs. What disturbed a lot of fans is the tendency towards slower, ballad-esque songs rather than brisk and fast paced crudeness. It seems the band have matured, and this seemed to coincide with when they got a meaty new contract.

As someone who isn't a MASSIVE fan of Green Day, it doesn't bother me so much if the songs aren't always hugely inventive or particularly clever - they're something to nod your head along to and to be honest, that's all I really want from the band. There are a few genuinely catchy songs, though, like Waiting, which starts off slow and then suddenly bursts into a frenzy.

One of the more popular songs on the album is Minority - it was released as a single and has a pretty catchy melody, although I do find it to be one of the more childish songs that Green Day have ever written, promoting being an individual to the ends that it's not simply an act as much as it is an achingly self-conscious declaration of contrarianism.

Perhaps my favourite song, though, is Warning, the first song the album and an insanely catchy one - it's not very heavy at all, but it really allows the Tre Cool to go for broke on the drums, and Billy Joe is allowed to display perhaps his most expressive vocal work yet.

It's not their best work, but it's ultimately very harmless and quite a fun little album, even if it's by the numbers and a lot softer than we're used to.

Summary: Soft but still fun
