Advantages: If you like this kind of thing, "Minority" is the only song I find "pretty good"

Disadvantages: Disappointing, Not much variation

Green Day's next release after the hit 1997 album "Nimrod" was quite successful, but upset and disappointed many of my fellow Green Day long-time fans.

The album is basically completely different from what has come before. Most of the songs seem very folk-inspired, rather than the fast punk rock of their first four albums. The album is on the whole a lot slower and less happy than their previous offerings, although it could be argued that every band needs to evolve in order to keep enjoying the experience and bringing out albums.

The reason for me not liking this album was because I am a fan of Green Day's earlier hits such as "Basket Case", "When I Come Around" and "Geek Stink Breath." The only songs that come close to their older style on this album are "Minority" and "Deadbeat Holiday," but both of these are still played with instruments tuned in a different way. The definite low points of he album are the silly song "Misery" (you couldn't really like that, unless you're a big fan of church organ music and seaside instruments), and the long-winded and quiet "Macy's Day Parade."

It's obvious from the general consensus on this website and worldwide that Green Day's new direction proved popular in getting them a wider fan base, but existing Green Day fans would have to check this out before making a purchase. If you like Green Day's earlier offerins I'd reccomend the incredibly enjoyable "Dookie!", while 1997's "Nimrod" offered a healthy mix of punk songs and more mellow offerings, all of which I found to my liking. Nimrod is definitely the most widely-appealing and varied Green Day album, this ones' a little too specialised into an area I'm not fond of! With 11 short tracks, it's not even particularly good value for money, something the 18-track Nimrod also has in its favour.

I'm a fan of their old stuff too. I'd still like to have a listen to this though to see how their music has progressed!

Same old story..if a band is serious then it has to develop and invitable that means a change in the direction of their music, some fans will go with it other will get left behiond and new fans will come along. I liked their earlier stuff but I thought this was agood album too and a more mature piece of work...that's my opinion anyway!

Welcome to dooyoo!

I love their older stuff, and for me they have gone off the boil over the last few years. Enjoy Dooyoo, read some opinions and get a feel for the site. Any questions let me know
