Advantages: Progressive metal for prog haters.

Disadvantages: Still sounds a little bit too much like Nevermore, but nevermind.

Only a year after their debut release, Communic exceed all expectations with the superb follow-up 'Waves of Visual Decay,' an album of long, progressive songs that risks being enjoyed by even the most ardent adversary of band like Dream Theater.

Compared to the previous album, there's a lot more going on in each song here, as they all really earn their extended lengths of up to ten minutes in most cases. The instrumental performance is solid and creative all-round, without bordering on pompous or alienating as prog metal often tends to, and with a balance between breakdown-filled songs such as 'Fooled by the Serpent' and the trio of lighter, more atmospheric offerings in 'Watching It All Disappear,' 'Waves of Visual Decay' and the excellent 'At Dewy Prime,' the album never becomes boring or repetitive.

Oddleif Stensland still sounds a lot like Nevermore's Warrel Dane, but here supplements his standard booming performance with some high shrieks for emphasis that work incredibly well and add an extra layer to the sound, and even without much variance in speed, this is an album that can be listened to repeatedly and enjoyed in a slightly different way each time. I look forward to hearing the band's most recent release.
