Advantages: genius lyrics & great tunes

Disadvantages: none

This has to be my favourite Pulp album out of their 10+ year career. It feels more complete than the others with not one dud track. Jarvis is in fine voice and lyrics backed by a complex weave of guitars & strings.
He seems to have been going through quite a life change and is alot more positive than This Is Hardcore album. The theme of 'today is the first day of the rest of my life' runs through this record like a stick of rock. I've played it to death and find it equally entertaining, moving and thought provoking (which all good music should be).

The album runs thus....

1. Weeds

Great opener, with a slight military march feel to the drums and crashing guitars in the chorus. Great lyrics highlighting the plight of asylum seekers dumped in the middle of nowhere.

2. Weeds II

More of an outro from the last track, with a laidback groove and pervy monologue from Jarvis.

3. Night that Minnie Timperley died

Mid paced track, with a slight T*Rex feel to it. Tells the story of a fateful night in which a girl goes to a party and accepts a lift home from a bloke.

4. Trees

Softer song with strings and acoustic guitars. Slightly mournful lyrics of love lost, but as usual poignant and not too sickly.

5. Wickerman

The albums piece de resistance ! A spaghetti western set in Sheffield, telling the story of someone going back to their old haunts from yesteryear. We follow the narrator as he takes us through his every thought.

6. I Love Life

Another softer song that grooves along nicely. Again taking stock of ones life and trying to stay positive when things seem to be falling apart.

7. Birds in your garden

Gentle acoustic number about taking the girl you love. Key lyric: "Go on and touch her inside".

8. Bob Lind (The only way is down)

Mid paced tune and a bit Pulp by numbers (still better than 90% of the competition though). Jangles along ok, with lyrics about starting afresh.

9. Bad cover version

Strong influences from 60's Scott Walker here (he actually produced the album). Lyrics paint the story of a man telling his ex that no matter whom she meets, they'll always be a poor imitation of him.

10. Roadkill

Acoustic guitars and haunting strings n effects back this sad tale of love lost.

11. Sunrise

Stomping closer that builds and builds where Jarvis telling us to have faith and make it happen.

Surprised you couldn't find more to say if it's your favourite by them. I've got it but never listened to it much for some reason. I'll have to give it another go.
