This album is just indicative of the current trend of new albums being released by several great bands - it's a weak effort! Pumpkins' Machina, Suede's Head Music, Radiohead's Amnesiac, and U2's All that u can't leave behind - were all hugely disappointing coming form my A-list of bands. Maybe i'm just getting a bit impatient with music nowadays, but I did give this album a chance. Listening to it over and over again has not changed my opinion. There are elements in the album that give away its 'preachy' side like Weeds (on asylum-seekers), Trees (how obvious), but it becomes annoying that that's all these songs are worth - Because the poetic creativity that is Pulp is sorely missing. The lyrics seem to jump at you like some bad info-mercial - they were devoid of inspiration; did not even entice, not even tickle. I fail to understand how some of the songs seemed so praiseworthy. Minnie Timperly, which got its share of hype, was just plain uninteresting. Birds In Your..... was more suited to a nursery school environment in terms of its melody. And Wickerman I found rather dull and dragging. The album also contained an overdose of Jarvis' trademark mumbling monologues - only this time they dragged on too long and were placed amid untasteful sounding background noise. These were done much better in previous songs such as I Spy from A Different Class, which had a more eerie and piercing effect. In its entirety, the album smacks of lack of songwriting effort from a True Artist of his generation. Or can it be that the musical genius is grinding to a halt.
