Advantages: great songs
Disadvantages: none
Weezer are a very underrated band. They make awesome pop music for people who find it hard to express themselves. This band invented geek rock way back in 1994 with The Blue Album possibly one the coolest albums ever recorded.
Weezer consists of
Pat Wilson- drums
Rivers Cuomo- vocals, guitar
Brian Bell- guitar, vocals
Matt Sharp- bass, vocals
Where do I begin? This was an album that I fell in love way back in 1995 when it was released in England. I saw the wonderful Buddy Holly music video, which was a homage to the television show Happy Days and was instantly hooked on catchy pop and lovely lyrics.
I was about fifteen when I first heard this band and they have been one of favourites ever since. When you grow up in a boring town in Cheshire, intelligent, read books and not into dance music, life can seem a little limited...or just plain dull. This Californian band reminded one of The Beach Boys but with a more intellectual twist. The band all met at Harvard University and truly are rather clever chaps. It was the summer of '95, it was hot and what better way to spend the long, hot days listening to sun kissed pop music about love, life and holidays.
It's hard being in love and especially when you love somebody whom does not care for you. The World Has Turned and Left Me Here is the greatest song ever about this subject matter. It's got a nice acoustic guitar line and a big loud chorus. The lyrics are :
"The World has turned and left me here,
just where I was before you appeared,
and in your place, an empty space,
has filled the void behind my face"
"I just made love with your sweet memory,
One thousand times in my head,
you said you loved it more than ever,
then you said
"You remain turned away, turning further everyday"
"The World has turned and left me here...
"I talked for hours to your wallet photograph,
and you just listened
you laughed, enchanted by my intellect,
or maybe, you didn't"
It really is a glorious song! Anway I digress somewhat.
The track listing is
1. My Name is Jonas
2. No one else
3. The World Has Turned and Left Me Here
4. Buddy Holly
5. Undone (The Sweater Song)
6. Surf Wax America
7. Say it Ain't So
8. In the Garage
9. Holiday
10. Only in Dreams
If you like pop music with sweet lyrics and big loud chorus' then this album is for you! My all-time favourite Weezer track is Only in Dreams. It starts with bass line, a cymbal and a little guitar lead before building into one almighty crashing anthem about love and loss. The lyrics are perfection and I listen to this whenever I get upset about a girl I am madly in love with but she lives so far away, its just impossible.
Only in Dreams
"You can't resist her,
she's in your bones,
she is your marrow,
and your ride home,
You can't avoid her,
she's in the air,
way up between the molecules of oxygen and carbon dioxide
Only in Dreams
You see what it means
reach out a hand
hold onto her
but when you wake
its all been erased
and so it seems...only in dreams
You walk up to her
ask her to dance
she says "Hey baby, I just might take a chance"
You say "That's a good thing, that you float in the air, that way I won't crush your pretty toenails into a thousand pieces".
An absolutely wonderful, pretty, crashing, sad and perfect song. I have tried to write about what this album means to me. I find that it expresses everything I have felt about being alone, about being in love and about having good times.
Cost: 9.99
My advice is to buy the deluxe edition with a whole host of B-sides and rarities on another disc. I absolutely love the mighty song "Jamie" and "I Swear it's True". The deluxe edition is available for £ 14 and is essential for any Weezer fans.
It is albums like this can inspire me, one of the greatest things about the band is that the lyrics are lovely and romantic. Women are the greatest things ever and they invoke such fantastic notions, even when the lyrics are sad they are still romantic. Anyway, this band are great!
