Red Hot Chili Peppers - What Hits!? What Hits!? is an 18-track collection; a compilation ranging over four EMI albums and one EP, and one Warner Bros. album, and including covers by the likes of Stevie Wonder, and Jimi Hendrix, and some tracks used on soundtrack albums. I would say, if you can’t afford to buy all the early RHCP albums, this is a good starting place to delve into their history. The tracks included span some seven years, and numerous styles including funk (obviously), rock, rap, metal, soul, hip hop, and as always, lots of bass. This is probably as good example as any of how diverse the Chili Peppers’ music has been (even ... Read the complete review

Hey everyone and welcome to my latest op-in-ion. Sit back, hold tight and enjoy the ride.... ‘What Hits!?’ (not to be confused with the video of the same name) was a compilation album released by EMI in 1992 pretty much to cash in on the success of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ album ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magik’. You see BSSM was the Chili’s first album under their new Warner Bros. record label, before that they had released 4 studio albums with the giant of music that is EMI Records. EMI of course still had the rights to all of the earlier songs so they chucked a few of the more notable ones on an album that they named ... Read the complete review

Do you find yourself humming Californication? If like many other people you have heard the occasional Red Hot Chili Pepper single on the radio and thought "Hmmm that was nice" then maybe you should try this album. "What Hits?" should really be titled Some hits as the chilis haven't gone un-noticed in the fickle chart world. As a historical collection of RHCP songs this album is well constructed with all the diversities of Anthony Keidis and co, and their funky punky love songs. The range of songs scoops classic songs from the "Fast Funky Punk" George Clinton produced era all the way through to their ... Read the complete review

What hits is a compilation of the Chili Peppers early work previous to Blood Sugar Sex Magik, apart from the inclusion of Under the Bridge – no doubt there to bump sales up. The first track, Higher Ground, is funky version of Stevie Wonder’s song from Songs in the Key of Life, not what you would expect from the band who brought you ‘Give it Away!’. The second track is the first of many cheesy songs on the album, funk metal hasn’t always been the Chili’s preferred style! Standout tracks are, Higher Ground, Backwoods, Knock Me Down, Show Me Your Soul and Johnny Kick a Hole in the Sky. Mind you, why they bothered covering Jimmi ... Read the complete review

Punk roots still hold their own against the oppressive hardcore and metal elements.
Lacks any kind of originality or self-worth.

A true show of the talent of Barat & Doherty that is unmarred by Doherty's current life
Some of the songs on the album seem to be just fillers

You have to admire the dedication.
There's more than a minor probability that it really isn't for you.

Some nice choruses, in a bland and cheesy sort of way.
A majority of filler.

A lost classic revived, Bathory's first experiment with lighter metal.
Some songs tend towards similarity and become repetitive.

Well, it's not even music, is it? It's not even noise nor ambience neither, it's just sound effects.
