Advantages: Anyone of us is brilliant
Disadvantages: Some dud vocals on this!
When Gareth was on that well loved TV series, i said he was overrated, an average singer and devoid of a personality but indeed he was popular to despite not winning warrant a singing career to see if he could sell music albums as well as just making people scream.
This album is quite a good one, and being critical of Gareth is something i've done from day one. The version of Unchained Melody gave me goosebumps and we see how a old song connects so perfectly with a singer that it's unbelievable - i almost believed it was Gareth's own song. Anyone Of Us, did really well as a single and it's got that brilliant chorus that doesn't leave your head to applaud. Sentimental,is groovy, funky and catchy enough to warrant a brilliant album teaser. As OK as the version of Suspicious Minds is, i'd rather this was left off - it just is not credible enough, in particular it's a very average version of a OK song.
Downtown, is more Gareth than these covers we keep seeing - groovy just like Sentimental it falls short of a popular oomph chorus wise. What My Heart Wants To Say gets a 10/10 from me - matches the artist YES, great lyrics? YES, great singing YES musically brilliant. Perfect song! Good Thing, is really nice and i would have loved that as a single - a great chorus again.Too Serious Too Soon is really nice, i think the chorus and melody go hand in hand to compliment Gareth's ahem weak vocals. It Ain't Obvious, catchy and groovy and is a road of fun! With You All The Time, gave me goosebumps- although gareth has weak range vocally this suits him very well. I've Got No Self control, is alike catchy and groovy and stands out perfectly. Tell me One More Time i think could have been left out - it isn't anything special. I think Walk On By, stands out and Alive is different enough to hook a listener. That's When You Know is thought provoking, emotional and interesting.
Not the best debut album i've ever heard, but a good one at that. Gareth's a pretty average singer and he is lucky to have a career at all having lost the show and being runner up. Some good songs' on here, but equally some really sketchy and weak vocals. I think the production is good and embracing the pop song like a one man Westlife it's a good attempt. Where does Gareth go from here though, can he do albums and albums like this again and again, we all know that didnt happen! but this is a good debut!
