Advantages: Used internet to publisise themselves, Fresh Sound
Disadvantages: shortness of album
Another one of the early summers must have albums in the UK. This Sheffield based band follows a growing indie music trend already increased by bands such as the Kaiser chiefs and the Kooks. The band use a mix of plunging guitar riffs, catchy use of drums and a very distinctive use of vocals to produce a incredibly different and easily identifiable sound. The Album ‘Whatever people say I am, That’s not what I’m not’ is excellent overall, and this is coming from a person who is not hugely into indie/alternative music.
I’ll just give a quick overview of a few of my favourite songs as if were to do an overview of the entire album I would end up repeating the same words over and over again.
I Bet you look good on the dance floor
Now to be honest I did not like this song at all when it first came out, it just seemed a bit too disjointed for my liking however after having listened to it for a certain period of time I now cannot switch the damn thing off. At just under three minutes long it is not the shortest song on the album but nor is it the longest song. When listening to it time just seems to fly by so you do end up just putting it on repeat. The song combines use of an indescribably catchy rhythm and lyrics that seem to me to be influenced a style of rap.
The View From The Afternoon
Unlike the previous song I liked this song from the very first time that I heard it played. Like much of the songs on this album it is very guitar heavy and had a very fats tempo. This song is what I’d call a good driving song, one that makes you feel good and that it recommended listening to if you are feeling bored.
Riot Van
This is easily the most slow, but not depressing song on the album. Obviously a song about a riot, this song is the 2nd shortest song on the album and goes like it. Good use of the usual instruments ensure that the song’s quality is kept up to the highest levels.
When the sun goes down
The Summer classic in the UK for this band, you cannot fail to like this song. In the same vein of quality as The Kooks ‘Naïve’. Superb Guitar Riffs support exemplary vocals to produce a classic song in the Indie genre.
I would recommend this album to absolutely anyone, regardless whether your are a rap only man etc. The album has the ability to transcend genres with an ease only seen by the red hot chilli peppers – don’t get me wrong im not comparing to them to the RHCP ledgends.
Summary: Rock On
