Brilliant! (Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not - Arctic Monkeys)

Advantages: Lyrics, tunes Disadvantages: None! Without a shadow of a doubt, my favourite album of the last five years. There was massive hype surrounding this band months before the album was even released, and they certainly did not disappoint in my view. I have never been a teenager growing up in Sheffield, but any lad who has been through those difficult years can relate to the topics which form the basis of the lyrics for this album. Everyone knows about the singles, and it is hard to top 'I bet that you look good on the dancefloor' and 'Fake Takes of San Francisco', although I am less keen on 'When the Sun Goes Down'. However the characterisation in the lesser known chords strikes an even deeper chord with me - what about the bouncer giving you hassle in 'From the Ritz to the Rubble', or the taxi driver with the attitude in 'Red light indicates doors are secured'? Alex Turner even manages to squeeze in 'Montagues and Capulets', a feat I would never have thought possible by a band of their ilk! In short, brilliant tunes, fantastic lyrics, a must for your record collection. I never grow tired of listening to it. Summary: Fully deserving of all the praise it received |
