The original version of Marvin Gaye's classic album What's Going On is available mid-price at around £10.99. However, if you really appreciate this album then pay about five pounds more and purchase the deluxe edition.
What you get is two CDs instead of one. The first CD contains the original album digitally remastered, and directly after it you get the original Detroit mix of the album which was refused. The mix is both different enough and similar enough to be both enjoyably new and not too far from the fans' perception of the original. I particularly like the new mix for Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler), as it sounds more sparse yet angry. After this mix you also as a bonus receive the backing track for What's Going On, which basically contains everything but the vocals. The next CD is the real treat for fans. It contains Gaye's live concert of the album at the Kennedy Centre which is previously unreleased and although the sound isn't great it is better than nothing. You also get the original single versions of What's Going On, God Is Love, and Sad Tomorrows. The latter two aren't of the quality of the album, but the first is a nice, different mix. Also, in the meantime, Head Title, the original version of Distant Lover is included, and its noticeably different, and also adds hope in the form that maybe Motown will do the same deluxe treatment to Gaye's next album Let's Get It On. This deluxe edition is a must and I haven't stopped playing it since I bought it.
