Advantages: Some oustanding tracks
Disadvantages: in equal measure some very poor tracks
The so called 'white Album' was the begining of the end for 'The Beatles' It was the start of a new era of confidence in their own individual abilities, comprising, which had been the essence of previous albums was not evident here, which is why end up with a double album. It's a complete contrast to it's predecessor, Seargent Pepper, with the songs taking on the authors own invidual trademarks, inmany respects most of the songs could have been solo efforts. In many ways this is why the album works, If you like Lennon, then are plenty of classic Lennon tracks here and if you like Mc Cartney, then the same applies. It was also this time that George Harrison really started to come into frutition as a songwriter, by 'The white Album' a Beatles album was becoming a crowded place. The album basically splits into two parts, songs which are complete junk, normally a dose of over self induldengce and those which are sheer genius, there never seems to be and inbetween and the junk and the genius come in equal measure. The tightness of production would be returned with 'Abbey Road', but this album shows the four Beatles strecthing their musical legs and doing their own thing. I see 'The White Album' as a genius single album or as a great double album, had they comprimised more and got the tracks reduced it could have been outstanding, as it is, it is brilliant. If you are first time Beatles listener and are following the musical trail from their solo careers as I did then this album is a good first choice. It does abound with quality tracks, 'Back inthe USSR', 'I'm So Tired', 'while My Guitar Gently Weeps', Happiness is a Warm Gun', Why don't we do it in the Road?'. an excelelnt purchase a good way of seeing how the Beatles changed and their music matured as they grew up. Compelling listening.

samgem - 03/10/01 Saddly i would disagree with you about this album, I think it's their best work, unlike sargeant pepper which was more of a McCartney album. |
