My review of the The Beatles: White Album - by an experienced guitarist

The White Album -so named for its distinctive white colour, is possibly the most controversial Beatles album. It marked a time in the bands career when they were growing apart as a unit and the tensions between the members are present here, and reflected by the stark contrast of musical styles. (I.E. Johns tracks sound very John, Paul's sound very Paul; there obviously wasn't so much of the interaction and idea sharing that went into previous albums).

But does that make it a poor album? Far from it!! It's positively inspired in places, and the bits that aren't inspired, are still excellent and often incredibly imaginative. There's also a thread of dark humour that runs through some of the tracks, and little forays into the avant-garde here and there, too.

The only song on the album that I skip is Revolution 9 (John getting a little too avant-garde, probably under conceptual artist Yoko's influence -it's good to giggle at once, but gets tedious quickly).

Other than that -this is a phenomenal musical feast; it's hard to pick faves from the fab fours offering, because there are so many to choose from;

But the Bch inspired (according to Paul) guitar gymnastic, BLACKBIRD, and Georges haunting (with Eric Clapton on guitar) WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS are two of my favourites... but the rest is mostly brilliant too (though be aware that if your idea of the beatles is 4 mop tops in a boy band -the strangeness of the material may surprise you in places).
10/10 one of the best albums ever, period
