Advantages: Interesting lyrics, unusual sound.

Disadvantages: Not to everyone's taste.

I have just bought this album from PJ Harvey, having only owned her most famous album "Tales from the City, Tales from the Sea" in the past. This new album is definitely a real departure from PJ's more well known sound. She is known for her gutsy, raw, often almost punk-influenced sound, but White Chalk is something completely different.

Many of the tracks on the album are sung in an ethereal falsetto, quite a quavering and piercing sound. It certainly isn't what you'd call "nice" but for me that's a really good thing. It is a very unusual and though-provoking album, that is actually quite unsettling to listen to.

Some of the tracks toward the middle of the album though do return to PJ's more accustomed style. The majority though are this new style of vocals paired with sparse musical backgrounds. particularly 'The Devil' is an uneasy but beautiful listen. This definitely isn't the sort of album you'd get bored with.

Lyrically the album is very interesting, but again, quite dark. It seems as though PJ is trying to explore a whole new side of herself or the world. It isn't your typical "I'm depressed after a break up" sadness, but something a lot more elemental and hard.

If you're into unusual, challenging music that will make you think, this album is for you.

Summary: Highly recommended.
