Dull RnB divas are ten-a-penny these days, so when someone comes out of the woodwork with something a little bit more innovative and witty to talk about than female empowerment and bling-bling, it comes as welcome refreshment. Philidelphian Jill Scott managed to breakthrough into the mainstream thanks to her 'Who Is Jill Scott?' album, which received huge critical acclaim when it was released in 2000. Previously, she had gained prominence as a Grammy Award winning songwriter, for 'You Got Me', performed by the Roots and Erykah Badu and as an actress in the stage-show 'Rent'. The album led in turn to Grammy nomination for her as ... Read the complete review

"Who Is Jill Scott? Words And Sounds Vol. 1" was released in 2000 and was Jill Scott's debut album. It finds the Neo-Soul artist coming out with fresh material at a time when the R&B and Soul off-shoot was booming with popularity as the likes of Erykah Badu, D'Angelo and Lauryn Hill had become popular and helped to start up a style that would be taken on by the likes of John Legend, Musiq Soulchild and Dwele later. 1. "Jilltro" (Intro) 2. "Do You Remember" Off a heavy introductory piece, you find that she moves right into another big recording as with the first proper tune on the album she comes to ... It’s not often that I buy an album just from hearing it playing in the record shop. It’s also not often that I buy this sort of music. Fortunately, on this occasion I was in the record shop long enough to hear most of this album and to realise that it offers something different from most of the soul music that gets released these days. Originating from Philadelphia, Jill Scott is either a poet with a fantastic voice or a singer with fantastic poetry – it is hard to determine which of these skills that she masters is the better. Although fairly unknown so far she has worked with the likes of Will Smith and has strong links with The Roots. This, ... Read the complete review

Who's that Girl? Jill Scott. Who is She? That's the question everybody is asking. And based on her album, Who Is Jill Scott?, I just gotta say, she's a damn great soul singer. Or is it a damn great jazz singer, or a damn great R&B artist? Or poet. Well, actually all of the above. This is the second great R&B album I have listened to in a while, the last being Lucy Pearl's self-titled debut from last year. Who Is? is a great collection of poetic R&B slices with jazz funk inspiration and Jill's hip hop influences. What a mix of smooth hip-hop / R&B and the finest jazz from her chosen listening (or 'homework' as she called it) ... Read the complete review

This debut album from Jill Scott is a neo-classic soul master piece. The 'Jiltro' introduces us to the artist as over an old school hip hop beat as she talks about how she loves to write both poetry and sing. Many would have already been familiar with Jill Scott before this formal introduction into the mainstream(ish) music industry as a spoken word poet on the Philly underground circuit as well as having toured with the Roots and added vocals to an additional version of their prolific 'You Got Me'.(1999) which she also co-wrote. The best thing about this album is that it is heavily influenced by Scott's spoken word background and paints vivid pictures in the ... Read the complete review
