'Whoa Nelly!' is the debut album of Nelly Furtado, the 23 year old Portuguese-Canadian. The album is full of gems and will take your breath away with its sheer diversity. Furtado has a mesmerising voice that can sway thought the softest of ballads and then explode into all out rap. While the base of the album is undoubtedly 'pop' orientated, there are various influences present on the album, like funk, hip-hop, R'n'B, just to name a few! When you combine these influences with meaningful lyrics (written by Nelly herself) and close harmonies you just get a splendid album that is a joy to listen to. An indication of the diversity of the ... Read the complete review

I'm eclectic me, (stop sniggering at the back), honest I am, its not the kind of thing I shout from the rafters about as more often than not I get bombarded with people mocking my latest 'in album', well I'm going to try again, problem is....... this isn't my latest in album, I've been listening to it constantly since this summer and thats rare for me. So Nelly Furtado then..... who is she?, shes a Portugese-Canadian singer of course, aged 23 mind (born December 2nd in Victoria Canada don't you know), she learnt the Ukulele at the age of 9 and it was obvious that she was going to be a big talent from there, scoring minor hits in her ... Nelly Furtado, the Portuguese/Canadian singer-songwriter, has already had a massive hit in the UK with 'I'm Like A Bird'. And now she's about to do the same with the forthcoming single 'Turn Off The Light'. These two tracks are perfect for sampling the album's diversity. Across 13 tracks, Nelly and her nasal whiny vocals explore all kinds of music genres including indie, R&B and even a bit of classical! All of the tracks on the album are fantastic, but here's details about some of my personal favourites. The album starts with the irritatingly catchy 'Hey, Man!', sampling strings and using great lyrics. '...On The Radio ... Read the complete review

I remember the first time I saw her video, I hated it. I didn't like her voice at all. Then I heard the song on the radio, for some reason it was easier to swallow. More and more times I heard it, until I grew to love her distinctive voice. I'm sick of these boring, thin, voices of all the other girls. Nelly has some meat and grit in her sound. Then the CD. I listened to it once and thought, I wasted 13 dollars. Not all of the songs are as accessible as "I'm Like a Bird". So, I had to grow to love it as well. "Turn off the Light" was first, then..."On the Radio" and pretty soon I was singing to it all. I think Nelly is something ... Read the complete review

Nelly Furtado is currently riding high in the UK charts with her debut single "I'm like a bird". Nelly's debut album came out at the beginning of March 2000 and although I have only owned it for a week, I keep it in the 5 disc changer of my cd player and can say that I have listened to it about 3 or 4 times a day. To get a deeper insight into the artist Nelly Furtado please take a look at my general Nelly Furtado opinion which I hope will be useful. Also check out the Nelly Furtado website at www.nellyfurtado.com, here you can actually listen to samples of each track to get a better insight into the kind of music on the cd, as to be honest it ...
