the best female singer there has ever been. No one in pop / soul comes close, and even compared to Maria Callas, or Billie Holliday - I still think that Aretha at her best is unbeatable. And this is a selection from her golden years, 1967 - 74. There are so many soul classics on here - satisfaction is surely guaranteed for anyone. It starts with "I never loved a man the way I loved you", which is perfect R&B. She's singing the traditional black woman's tale about being a victim, but in such a powerful way that you know it can't go on much longer. Sure enough, next up is "RESPECT" - it was already a great song by Otis Redding, but ...

still think it s as great as the first time I heard it. It is a perfect introduction to the music of Aretha Franklin for the uninitiated, more so I would say than a greatest hits which usually just collects together all the Atlantic singles, which are wonderful, but there s more to the picture than that. This album gives the breadth of Aretha s talent as a Composer/Interpreter/Singer/Pianist and all round soul diva. The great news is it can be picked up for under £5 on Amazon and really is essential listening. The liner notes by David Nathan are superb and very informative with track information/recording dates ...
