Palookaville - Fatboy Slim
by Salmon91 - written on 04/06/09 (Very useful, 43 readings)
Rating:
The most recent studio album released under Norman Cook s Fatboy Slim moniker, was a shift in style compared to his earlier albums. Instead of his previous dependence on vocal loops Cook decided to take things back to basics (sort of) and use live instruments and vocals as well as more traditional song structures. However, compared to those earlier albums, the critical consensus was pretty bleak, with review ranging from the okay to the bad. When I first listened to this album, about a year after it s initial release, I had a similar opinion, I thought the album was distinctly okay. Nothing special. Last year though, something strange happened, I listened to the album ...

Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars - Fatboy Slim
by gchessun - written on 23/11/00 (9 readings)
Rating:
This is the latest album from Fatboy Slim after the phenonmenal succes of the You've Come A Long Way Baby album. This sees Fatboy Slim depart from the traditional Big Beat style of recent years for a slightly more agreeable style of music. The tracks here are very good and you find yourself humming or dancing along quite easily. The best track in my opinion is Song For Shelter which has a very ambient feel to the synthesizer and with excellent vocals from Roland Clark. It has a slight big beat style coming through with a subtle guitar-ish element working alongisde the rhythmic bass. Star 69 is an interesting song with it's liberal use of the F word.... ...

Rating:
Norman cook's last album was good but his latest one - Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars is well...not good. Its ok for artists to change styles but i think such drastic change is brave at best. Middle tracks are halfway to been descent but beginning and ending gets a big thumbs down i'm afraid. And to think i actually ...

Products similar to Why Try Harder: The Greatest H...
World Citizen - Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Sylvian
By turns rhythmical and cutting edge; with a political mindedness it's not ashamed of
The lyrics may be a little too political for some
The Chronicles Of A Bohemian Teenager - Get Cape Wear Cape Fly
A decent debut album that mixes Folk and rock superbly
He still hasn't got the radio play he deserves
The Art Of The Koto Vol. 1 - Nanae Yoshimura
Hauntingly beautiful and curiously accessible traditional music from Japan
It might make you want to buy the next two volumes!
Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back - John Williams - Soundtrack
The perfect continuation of a popular score with a lot more drama thrown in
If you never bought into any aspect of the Star Wars saga, then you probably won't like it
Making Love And Music: The 1976-79 Recordings - Dr. Hook
One of the best songs ever - A Little Bit More
A disappointing end to the album.
La Bella Vista - Harold Budd
Beautifully textured, warm solo piano from a unique and incomparable artist
It lasts but 40 minutes . . . I could easily listen to another 40 more !
How To Get Everything You Ever Wanted In Ten Easy Steps - The Ordinary Boys
The first half of the album is packed full of promise
The second half of the album is a massive bore
Congotronics - Konono No.1
Congonese dance music - traditional yet modern - avant-garde yet accessible
Some may find it a little repetitive
From Within Vol.1 - Richie Hawtin
Glorious early 90s electronica by two genuine pioneers
Might be hard to find
Capture / Release - Rakes
A decent uptempo band, good lyrics and pretty catchy music
Won't appeal to anyone who isn't keen on the current Indie Rock scene
