      Advantages

      Disadvantages

One of my favourites - one that every metal fan should hear, without a doubt.

      Track List:
1 - Beyond The Dark Sun
      2 - Winter Madness
      3 - Sleeping Stars
      4 - Battle Against Time
5 - Death And The Healing
      6 - Starchild
      7 - Beautiful Death
      8 - Sadness And Hate

After hearing "Winter Madness" from this album on a free Metal Hammer CD, I instantly fell decided it was one I had to buy. Wintersun is a project created solely bu Jari Maenpaa (ex Ensiferum) (apart from the drums, recorded by Kai Hahto (ex Rotten Sound).

From the first track, Beyond The Dark Sun, the heavy, yet melodic sound of this album definitely comes through. The forefront of the mix is dominated by guitars, and Jari's coarse vocals, yet expertly composed synths fill the background, giving a very full sound, like nothing else I have ever heard.
Sleeping Stars lowers the pace for the first time, and again proves Jari's skill at creating a beautiful blend of guitars, and synth lines, giving a magical, yet powerful sensation. As the album progresses, some may begin to tire of it, as there is, in all honesty, little variation from the formula set out by the first three or four tracks. In spite of this, each track is longer than the one before, building towards the epic ten minute Sadness And Hate.

All in all, this remains one of my favourite albums of all time. It amazes me that one man could have written and performed such complex music, and it's all brought together by outstanding drumming from Kai Hahto.
Anyone into Ensiferum or similar music should definitely give this one a listen if you haven't already.
