Advantages: It'a Beatles album, and an excellent one at that

Disadvantages: There really are none

With The Beatles is the second album from the Best Band in the World Ever (Fact). Their first effort, Please Please Me was brilliant in comparison with anything else released at the time but this album, iconic sleeve and all, was something else entirely as far as quality and diversity are concerned. I grew up with this album in the house and it's the one I hold dear almost more than the other, more revered Beatles albums. I have a clear memory of my Mum teaching me the names of the four individuals on the cover when I was very young....and only being able to remember Ringo, the one with the funny name at the bottom! That cover design was and is so perfect, so cool, so iconic, so important looking, giving us a clue to the gems within. It's an album that contains 6 cover versions, as was the Beatles' early preference, and they are complete stonkers, even Please Mr Postman (a bit cheesy, but don't think of the Carpenters!) and especially Roll Over Beethoven and the sensational, superb screamer that is Money. (John Lennon is really losing his voice on that one - it was recorded at the end of a session and the vocals show a real rawness that would be hard to replicate.)
The Beatles' own compositions are obviously superb, to get better with each album, and to eventually replace all covers. I love the raucous It Won't Be Long, Paul's All My Loving with its lovely walking bassline and the nice'n'loud I Wanna Be Your Man, which they donated to the worthy cause that is The Rolling Stones. Generous or what!? That was the level of quality they provided - even that great song they were happy to give away.
The album is a gem - not just for Beatles completists but anyone who loves, well, good music.
