This is such a good album. Obviously this was never going to compare to some of the earlier stuff that they've done, but it's got a slightly different style whilst maintaining the mad lyrics, the irony in the songs, mad songs, beats, etc. The biggest issue I have is that it doesn't go on for long enough, it's like 45-50minutes long or summit, which is just not long enough. Best track has to be the duet with Ian Dury (shortly before he died) called Drop Ded Fred.

I was in a pub 4 weeks ago when I heard that song, "Love struck". It was from one of the best british music band, MADNESS !!!!!! I decided to go and buy the CD, I went to HMV, I bought the CD, I went home. I played the CD, and ever since, I listen to the CD all the time. I listen to it at home, at work in my office, in the car. Well, virtually everywhere. I am french, and adapting my musical taste to the actual british music was a bit difficult. There are all the boys and gilrs bands on the scene now. You really cannot make the difference. The melodies are the same, no originality. But my friends, when you listen to madness, you really realise what people are missing. I must admit that British music has been one of the best in the world for a long time, David Bowie, U2, Beattles, Beautiful south, Chris Rea, Moloko, Boy George, etc.... I really wish that people stop listen to only one type of music and start enjoy a wider variety of styles. You need everything to make a world.

After such a long time some people probably doubted that Suggsy, Barson etc would be able to recapture the same lyrical genius. With this album they have succeeded, although the 3 singles released were all woefully undersold. Lovestruck for example got to number 10 in the charts, when in a chart with taste, it surely would of got to number 1. Lovestruck ********** - the most popular single and was surely my contender for single of the year, lyrically and musically this song was a tour de force. Madness have the uncanny knack of taking a subject such as alcohol abuse, and turning it into a jaunty sing along tune. The lyrics were also extrmeley clever in that the song had a double meaning. For example "I've fallen for a lampost, spilling out my deepest feelings" The proper meaning is obvious, he is leaning on a lampost for support in his drunken stupor and ends up being sick by it. The other meaning could also be he has fallen for a girl who is tall and slender thus has the appearance of a lampost, spilling out his deepest feelings would in that context be took as saying he loves her etc 10/10 Johnny the Horse **************** - woefully underated, this song even makes Lovestruck sombre with its' tune. The song is about an old down and out, a band member heard about, who had got kicked to death by a gang of people for entertainment - one presumes. If you already own this on the album but do not have the CD Single seek it out as the Video for this song is on it, which adds imensely to the enjoyment factor. 10/10 I am the Communicator ********************* - Old school Ska, with lyrics that do not have any decypherable meaning to me, but that isn't the point. This song is just an out and out old schooler, in a similar vein to Night boat to cairo and One step beyond, in my opinion. 9/10 - 10/10 if you love dancing
about! 4am *** "Its 4 in the morning why don't you call me, I'm sorry I hurt you, I still want you back" - People who bought the Suggs solo Album 'The lone ranger' will be familiar with this tune, given a Madness work over its actually better than the original, and the original was very good. 8/10 - 10/10 if you are in a hopelessly romantic mood! The Wizard ********** - This song is very reminiscent of Night boat to cairo, this is lyrically one of the weakest songs on the album, but that doesn't mean it isn't good. It just means all of the other songs are masterpieces. Any other band in existence would not be able to make a song out of these lyrics, but Madness manage it with suitable aplomb, as you would expect. "I'm a wizard and theres magic in the air' You said it Suggsy, this album is full of magical moments, that just make you smile. 8/10 - 9/10 if you are drunk! Drip Fed Fred ************* - This song is excellent, although as with Johnny the horse it struggled in the charts. Ian Dury(RIP) guest stars on this track, about an underworld gangster. The lyrics are quite dark and forboding, but are delivered in such a style as not to seem like that on the first listen. A sample of how lyrically superb this songs gets is this verse: "There is a simple solution, one called honour amongst thieves, so we'll take pity on your souls and only cap your knees" delivered by Ian Dury in his own inimatable style. To appreciate the magnificance of this song, I suggest buying this album (more so if you are an Ian Dury fan as well) I would also recommend you look out for any repeats of Later with Jools Holland that had Madness and Ian Dury perfoming this song on, as it was one of the best perfomances I have ever witnessed. Jools Holland even stated that for him, that was one of his
favourite ever perfomances that he has ever seen {high praise indeed}. Going to the top **************** - This song seems to compliment The Wizard very well, as this song has the same feel to it. Thr music to this one is excellent, and will have you tapping your feet on the floor, then again so will most of the tunes on this album. 8/10 - 9/10 if you like tapping your feet alot! Elysium ******* A wonderful haunting melody. The lyrics are spellbounding, the song is mesmeric, definately one of the finest songs on the album. 10/10 Saturday Night Sunday Morning ***************************** Madness at their very very best, scintilatingly wonderful. This song is one for the 'fans'. "I knew you'd come back, we always do, like theives returning to the scene of the crime" Brilliant words, all about their return, everything has changed - just everything. This is the best song on this criminally underated album. 11/10 - technically not possible I suppose but it merits more than 10 :-) If I didn't care **************** This song is incredible, and was definately worthy of more recognition, suggs sounds on top form in this one: "I know theres time... for us, I know theres time" Lovely song about knowing there is time to keep a relationship going, this is the only song on the album written by someone other than Madness. 9/10

Wonderful is much more than a plain old album... it's a reunion album for the greatest band of all time, IMHO, Madness! With songs such as 'The Communicator', 'Satruday Night, Sunday Morning' and 'The Wizard' we get to see the kind of wacky Madness we all knew and loved early in their career and we also get songs like '4am' and 'Elysium' which epitimised some of their laster music - the best of both worlds in my mind. We also get treated to a song performed alongside the late great Ian Dury, 'Drip Fed Fred', apparently connected with the London Mayoral Campaign of earlier this year. Then, as if all that wasn't enough, we get two utter classics - 'Lovestruck' and 'Johnny The Horse'. This really is a great album by a great band.

Come Suggsy boy, where've you got to? We're all waiting for quality music to grace our ears again and get rid of that tripe like Westlife, Billie etc etc etc. Your latest three song my not have got that high in the charts but around where i live every-one loves you and are longing for your next piece of genius. Everytime i go on Holiday i always end up with some-one else slightly tipsy and singing "OUR HOUSE" on Karaoke. No matter how bad we sing it every-one cheers and shouts for more, not because of us but because of you. Encore, encore, encore.
