Advantages: a few good songs
Disadvantages: bland cover
As a big fan of Erasure I would like to say that all of their work is pleasing, but this is not an album which thrills me as much as some of their others.
Who are they:
Duo specialising in synth based pop music. Andy Bell on vocals and Vince Clarke on keyboards.
Highlights:
Head for the sheer pop class of 'Heavenly Action' which finds Bell on fine form, if not a little camp as he gets to grip with some love based lyrics. His performance is eccentric and he seems to bask in the glory of the kitsch element of the song. It has a good melody though and the chorus will invigorate and encourage you to dance.
I also rate 'Who Needs Love Like That' which is Bell lamenting that he doesn't need to be treated so badly by his partner and won't stand for it any longer. Again, the camp is played up and he seems to prance through the lyrics like a spoilt queen, adding to the genius of the song.
Head for 'Oh L'amour' for a more held back arty track. This is a calming and intriguing number, a cry for help if you will, as Bell pours his heart out over a lost love. It showcases his deeper vocal range and is a track which stirs the senses.
Avoid:
'Pistol' is a misfire, lacking a decent hookline to get your teeth into.
Overall:
11 songs, dubious artwork and a handful of good songs, plump for their 'Circus' album instead
Summary: okay
