Advantages: Lots of Elvis music, interviews, and demo recordings
Disadvantages: None
The Elvis Presley specialist record label FTD has really treated Elvis fans over the years, with a great many studio outtakes and live shows being provided for our listening pleasure.
However another area they have worked in is book/CD sets, where the CD is supplemented by a hardback book which sheds light on the music. These are often mainly filled with fantastic images, with some relevant text to put the images and music in context.
WRITING FOR THE KING is an FTD book/CD set which features a series of live recordings which Elvis made in Las Vegas in the 1970s, along with a series of original demo recordings submitted to Elvis. Demo recordings were songs recorded by singers (as opposed to stars) - the recordings would then be sent to Elvis for him to choose which songs he wanted to record. This is the first time that listeners have been able to hear these demo recordings and so that in itself is a real treat for Elvis fans.
However this treat is of course supplemented by a fantastic hardback book featuring more than 140 interviews with songwriters who wrote songs that Elvis recorded, including the famous rock 'n' roll songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.
This is a fantastic set and would make a fantastic addition to the Christmas list of any self-respecting Elvis fan.
