Advantages: Variety of styles, Excellent tracks, Different artists
Disadvantages: None!
Where The Swarm (Killa Beez) is mainly about bringing lesser-known acts to the fore, Wu Chronicles celebrates some of the many collaborations that the Wu have been involved in over the years. While you won't find Tupac or Eminem here, you will find people like Mobb Deep, Notorious B.I.G., Ras Kass, Cocoa Brovaz, Tha Alkaholiks and other underground names.
This is the first time that most of these tracks have been released on a Wu album, although Latunza Hit, the original version of Cold World, Wu Gambinos and 4th Chamber can all be found on other albums. This album is an excellent mix of styles, both instrumental and rhymes. Its the best Wu Tang compilation as it contains such a mix of artists and styles. It also doesn't hurt that every track is a classic!
The album is very good, which makes it difficult to pick out standout tracks, although I particularly enjoy 'The What?' by Notorious B.I.G and Methodman - its excellent. Another excellent track is 'Gunz and Onez' by Heltah Skeltah and Methodman. Maybe its the quality of Methodman's rapping but I think that he can transform any track. Also, hes a pretty busy guy and it would be easy to release a quality album based on just his collaborations! Having said that, RZA, Raekwon and Ghostface also feature on quite a few tracks on the album. Another standout track is 'Semi Automatic : Full Rap Metal Jacket' which is basically a mini-Wu track as its by Streetlife, Inspectah Deck and U-God. Its tucked away at the end of the album, which doesn't really do it justice!
I would definitely recommend this album to anyone interested in the Wu Tang Clan, and not just completists like myself. This album is definitely the best of the Wu compilations, which is saying something as the other compilations are also good.
Because this album isn't restricted to any particular style or person, its got some excellent variety. You could approach it eithe
r as a Wu collaboration album, or just a varied hip hop album. Recommended.
