Advantages: A strong return from Miss Minogue with diverse stylings of pop.
Disadvantages: A lot of excellent tracks from the recording sessions were left off the tracklist.
After a prolonged break post the release of her Ultimate Kylie set to deal with some personal issues, Kylie returned to her place on the pop throne with her 10th studio album, titled X.
The album's lead single '2 Hearts' is actually nothing like the album itself, which in turn shows that this is a diverse pop album exploring various styles within the pop spectrum.
The highlight track on the album for me is by far the Calvin Harris produced electro-dance-pop stomper 'In My Arms', everything about the song is perfect and it has a chorus to die for. The other album's masterpieces are Freemasons produced disco-pop belter 'The One' which is true classic Kylie, electronica stomper 'Like A Drug', a suggestive ditty which leaves your mind feeling as though it's a washing machine that's just been on fast spin, and sexy pop 'Sensitized' which wouldn't sound out of placed if used in a car commercial.
The album's only real flaw as far as I can see is that some of the best tracks from the album's recording sessions were left off. iTunes exclusive bonus tracks 'Magnetic Electric' and 'Rippin' Up The Disco' were worthy of inclusion, as well as 'Wow' b-sides: 'Do It Again', 'Carried Away' and 'Cherry Bomb' as well as a leaked track called 'Fall For You' which could have been a potential single - these tracks are worth tracking down. Instead we have 'All I See' which sounds like a Body Language reject, 'Cosmic', a lyrically banal ballad and 'Heart Beat Rock', Calvin Harris produced but slightly fillerish.
That aside, this album is a must buy. A true pop gem and a smashing, triumphant return.
Summary: A very highly recommended purchase.
