Yankee Hotel Foxtrot saw a strange period for Wilco, on finishing this album their label refused to release it and decided to stream it free from their website. What makes this so surprising is that it's such a fantastic album and was pre-Radiohead's free music stunt. I Am Trying To Break Your Heart opens the album in befitting fashion. Drums clatter and cascade whilst keys hum for the first minute before Jeff begins to sing sweet poetry over an apparet mess of sound. A lovely dischordal piano solo is a highlight. A record sure to feature on a fair few Best Of The Decade lists in a couple years time, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Wilco's masterful, intoxicating, constantly surprising fourth album (not counting the excellent Mermaid Avenue collaborations with Billy Bragg and the ghost of Woody Guthrie) is as jaw-droppingly brilliant now as it was then. A stirring, provocative mélange of alt. country, experimental pop, folk and rock, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot marks the logical progression from the boundary-pushing contents of 1999's Summerteeth.
