Advantages: good for abba fans
Disadvantages: lack of variety
This is another Zoom Karaoke album, made up of fifteen hits from the movies. I have decided to brave it!
The album is off to a positive start with 'Mamma Mia'. The success of the film of the same name has started Abba mania all over again so this is wise having it on the CD. The song would lend itself well to being sung by a group of girls. We move onto track two and oh look! More Abba! This time it is 'Dancing Queen.' This is another firm karaoke favourite, though I find the high parts are always quite hard to pull off.
Yet more Abba, with 'Honey Honey' which is designed for those more refined moments, you can perform this song with a bare whisper, as it is light and mellow. 'Our Last Summer' pops up too, there is a blissful melody to this track and it is definitely one for the girls to do at the end of the night as a 'we're going home now' song.
A fifth Abba song in the form of 'Super Trouper' is really pushing it, I mean two would have sufficed! So it is a relief when you move onto 'Grease.' 'Summer Nights' is a staple of most karaoke nights and the overly soppy 'Hopelessly Devoted To You' will bring tears to the eyes for all the wrong reasons! After a seige of tracks from 'Grease', we slide effortlessly into 'High School Musical'. If you have the high pitched wail of Hudgens or the sickly aroma of Effron then you might just pull it off! 'We're All In This Together' seems a pointless inclusion as the chorus usually relies on a forty strong set of good looking american teens. The karaoke nights I have been present at usually have one old dear called Maureen, tone deaf and convinced she's the next Vera Lynn.
This album will thrill fans of Abba, Grease and High School, but for the rest of us it is very slim pickings.
