Advantages: Entertaining, enjoyable, good show.
Disadvantages: can grate a little after a while.
Mind you, she hasn't seen him play live!! That said he seemed somewhat milder live than he does on record/CD apart from the prolific "motherf***ers" between some tracks!
I write this having seen Eminem headline on the Sunday night at the 2001 Reading Festival - he followed on from the marvellous Marilyn Manson - more about that later!
I've written previously on Eminem so please forgive any repetition here but I will try to concentrate on the live aspect. I was in two minds before his performance, as was my boyfriend, but we have both been converted (to an extent!)
Initially the live show started with his side-kicks, D12, a six piece all-black rap band, and no sign of Eminem so initially I was a little disappointed as I had expected a big entrance and generally rap is not my thing.
By their third number the man himself appeared - dressed in pale clothing, a fairly small figure with a white headscarf/bandana disguising what was underneath - (does he still have a peroxide crop?!)
The crowd roared and the familiar numbers began as he rapped his way through a lot of the Marshall Mathers LP and some of the Slim Shady LP. The massive hit "Stan" was sadly truncated for some reason leaving the crowd a little disappointed.
Half way through the show he took a break giving the crowd a showing of a Slim Shady "South Park" style cartoon featuring Eminem on the huge video screens. It was amusing and enjoyable and didn't really detract from the performance.
He then proceeded with the second half of the show which included D12 again, aswell as inflatables such as finger-sticking hands and Mummies and pyrotechnics. He did a storming version of "The Way I am" with Marilyn Manson coming back out to join him on the chorus - though they were a funny sight together - the towering, gothic figure of Manson against the shorter, baggy-clothed Eminem! But then again with their di
verse music and controversy - they probably have a lot in common.
During his performance he also paused to take a moment's silence for soul singer Aaliyah and her family who had been killed in a plane crash that day.
Myself and my boyfriend are both confirmed "Rock-bods" and we both left the show impressed with the performance even if we both found the rap-style of music a little grating after a while.
Eminem appears to know what his fans want and delivers it, with humour too!
