Now in it’s sixth year the Gwyl at Ystalyfera is now going strong. The Gwyl is basically Ystalyfera’s locals attempt to help the local facilities and is manned totally by volunteers who put in a massive amount of time and effort.

The Gwyl last year saw over seven thousand visitors and is a mixture of Welsh and English culture. This year the main groups were as follows: -

Thursday the 19th of July – Welsh night with big welsh groups like Melys and Big Leaves.

Friday the 20th – A number of Groups in the local pubs in the afternoon. Later that evening was the blockheads with local star Bonnie Tyler. Also Phil Jupitus (of never mind the buzzcoks star) joined the blockheads and he can’t half sing.

Saturday the 21st – A number of local bands including ‘The Squirts’ and ending in the tribute band ‘The Boogie Wonder Band’ who sang all the ‘Earth Wind and Fire’ classics.

Sunday the 22nd – The big day for me that everyone had waited for. Again a number of local groups in the afternoon including ‘The Racing Cars’ who had a number one in the seventies called ‘they shoot horses don’t they’ – anyone remember? In the evening was the classic ‘Uli John Roth’ who had with him members of ‘The Scorpions’ in the Schenker Brothers ‘Rainbow’ in Don Airey, ‘Jethro Tull’ in Clive Bunker. A great line up on a small stage, which rocked the locals till the early hours of the morning.

During the afternoons there was a number of performances also by local schools and ended up on Sunday with a performance by local boy ‘Huw Chiswell’ and the local combined schools singing along.

Ticket prices varied from a £5 to £10 for Sunday evening being the most expensive. Under 12’s get in for free and there is plenty of entertainment there for them in a fun fair and var
ious clowns, etc.

Well what are you waiting for keep an eye on the link below and I expect to see you there next year.

Goodness. When I saw this title, I thought you'd just banged the keyboard. This is a real festival though, eh? Amazing. :)
