I went to the Hackney Empire in 2004 to see a production of "Mother Courage and Her Children" with my sixth form A Level Drama and Theatre Studies class. On the way there one of our teachers had been telling us about her childhood in Hackney, which made it a bit scary for us suburban kids, but we were looking forward to seeing the play and the building, as it had just undergone a £17 million refurbishment project.
