Advantages: Better live than even on the CD, Great Guitar work, True artistic talent
Disadvantages: You may need new ear drums
To be quite honest I originally heard Muse for the first time after the release of their album Showbiz and was taken aback by their powerful lyrics backed up be a great talent and use of musical instruments. Tracks such as Muscle Museum, Plug in Baby and Sunburn. I got the C.D and listened to them constantly, the music was utterly brilliant. I did think about seeing them live during the summer but one thing led to another and well I had to put it off due to work commitments. Time passed and they were about to release the Origin of Symmetry album and doing a tour of the U.K also coming to Edinburgh. I bought my ticket as soon as I could. Was I in for a shock that night or what? The latest release the band had made was Feeling Good, the classic blues track and to be honest I was wondering how a rock/punk band could release a track that could compare to the original; I was pleasantly surprised. Mat Belemy?s voice is amazing and reaches quite a vocal range that most men can only admire, myself included. The track much like the original started with gentle vocals in the background but unlike the original it also had the light fluttering of the guitar in the back and instead of the original orchestra that burst in during the chorus, Muse had a burst of Orchestra from their guitars that sounded magnificent. I was looking less and less forward to the concert because after hearing them on C.D how could they ever compare to what my impression of the band was? I got to the packed concert venue, the Corn Exchange if anyone has been to Edinburgh, and there were crowds of people, it was bonfire night and well fireworks were going of in the surrounding sky. People begging to buy tickets, they would sell their grannies I believe just to get a chance to see this gig, maybe it was not going to be so bad after all. Finally inside out of the November cold but well you would never suspect the coldness that had once been only minutes ago. The first b
and was Hundred Reasons to put it down in one word it was EXCELLENT. I was now anxiously waiting to hear what Muse sounded like live. The lights went out and we were in the pitch black, then suddenly the first track started up. Strobe lights flashing from all directions, the band were as good, no actually 5000 times better than any C.D they were on was. The vocals were astounding; the music was amazing. I have never been one to take drugs but well they could not compare to the high that this music alone was taking me. A mega mosh pit had formed and well it was amazing seeing the people of all ages coming together to hear the appeal of this band. I was happy, damn it I was more than happy, I was not wanting to come to the concert because once you build up an expectation of a band you do not want it to be crushed by their lack to play well live but with only a three member band I was astounded at their ability to play better than any recording. If you are into alternate music of any kind they have something to match your taste. In their early days it was noted that Tom York from Radiohead told them to lighten up, well the music they perform shows they did not need to change their formula. Do Not get me wrong they are not half as depressing as radio head and well the music that assists them is that of such a wide and varied focus that well you will enjoy. They are bringing back the need for live and actual music that is being played that has been lacking from music for quite some time and anything that can improve music is fine by me. If you have the chance to see one band live this year make it Muse they will not disappoint you. I cannot say enough about them to convince you to see them, I am a student with little money but have volunteered for some extra hours work to afford my ticket, and so that is how good they are. Give them a shot.

- 30/09/03 Like Mrs said, if you read other peoples ops they will read and rate yours, otherwise you wont make much money. Matt bellamy is a bit of a twat, but Muse are very impressive live. |
