Notting Hill is my favourite part of London. Its like a little village far away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Of course its just a stones throw from central London but if I had to choose anywhere to live in the city this is where it would be.

The carnival is Notting Hills showpiece and takes place every August. This year it is the 30th and 31st August (Sunday and Monday). If you're planning on staying in Notting Hill during these dates I would start looking for hotels now as many will be booked up.

The parades are well worth watching and cover a wide range of diverse people. The music is very loud so its best to warn young children before hand. Children will love the carnival and all its bright colours but they can get lost. Suggest a meeting place should this happen before you get too near the crowds.

Food is excellent at the Notting Hill carnival. If you get the chance try something new. There are foods from all over the world and plenty of wierd and wonderful things to try. You probably won't be able to sit as the crowds are too big so think about what is standing up food!

There are lots of things to buy so take plenty of money but beware of pickpockets - there are lots about and some are children. Keep wallets in a tight front pocket where it cannot be taken out easily. Never wear a bumbag.
