Advantages: great music

Disadvantages: none

Lots and lots of complaints anbout this Ozzfest mainly due to the fact that there were only 4000 people allowed in the main front area of the min stage. Luckily, I arrived early and wandered into that area not knowing what was happening. Unluckily, I missed all the Kerrang! stage bands whom I wanted to see (esp. 100 Reasons and Ill Nino). So, this is really a review of the main stage.

First up were Antiproduct: The jury's still out on that one.
Zakk Wild's Black Label Society: Entertaining! Really good. They played last year on the Kerrang satge but were promoted to main stage, playing good old fashioned beer swiging, foot on speaker, blonde hair flialing rock and roll.
Mad Capsule Markets: There was this one annoying bloke who kept on shouting for Slayer throughout their set. The crowd weren't pleased with MCM's mix of technno and punk. Probably better in a smaller venue.
Drowning Pool: A surge to the front by little kids means it's WWF favourites DP take the stage. Pretty good if incomprehensible. One tip, don't get stick in the pit when they play 'Bodies'. I did...
Millencollin: No equipement, borrowed instruments, not for Ozzfest.
Cradle Of Filth: Up to now, the weather was quite pleasant, maybe a bit of drizzle. But as soon as COF took to the stage the heavens opened! A full-blown hail storm! I must admit that I'm not the biggest Cradle of Filth fan, but I decided to listen with an open mind. It was highly entertaining with stilt walkers and fire breathers. "We hate you and you hate us" That's Dani Filth after another barrage of water bottles.
LostProphets: Lots of hype and lots of anticipation for LP. They took to the stage with a chorus of "Ian!" from all the little girls in the front. In fact Ian Watkins is becoming the new Brandon Boyd. They played a lacklustre set the only good bit being when the band bought on Karl Middleton from Earthtone 9 (RIP) to sing 'T
he Handsome Life Of Swing'. Don't get me wrong, I love LP on tape, but live, they just don't seem to cut the mustard.
Slayer: Really good, they put everything into it and they played 'Stain of Mind' which is the only Slayer song I know.
System Of A Down: Just like LostProphets, SOAD was highly aticipated by the crowd. Unlike LostProphets, System played a blinding set. Unfortunately, the band had to abandon their set ten mins before the end due to the wet stage from the rain and some of the rigging narrowly missing drummer John Dolmayan. To compensate, the band played an ultra quick version of Sugar and Suite-Pee cleverly entitled 'Suite-Pee Sugar'. SOAD would have been kings of the day had it not been for...
Tool: For me, the band could have come on and farted and I wouldn't have cared. Yes, this is a biased review because I absolutely love Tool! Maynard being a clever kind of fellow opted for a long leather coat and clothes, rather than tiny shorts like last year. No major changes to the set: 'The Grudge' 'Stinkfist' 'Schism' 'Parabola' 'Sober'. But they did play 'Tick And Leeches' and 'Traid' with guest drummer Mike Bordin from Faith No More (RIP). Maynard even had a slight rapport with the crowd: "Are you cold? Then put your hands into each others pockets" A total genius and a death to the first borns of all those who booed them. Funnliy, I was involved in a big ruck over one of the drumsticks...sad to say I didn't get it. We decided to give it to an American gentleman who had travelled all the way from the States to see them.

Unfortuately, we left before Ozzy's set. Despite the weather and stupid regulations, Ozzfest 2002 was not the total washout people say it was

Lost Prophets were pretty good when I saw them; but that was ages ago, maybe they're not suited to arenas.
