“ The biggest open air festival in Europe is taking placing early August in Kostrzyn on the Oder, Poland „
Przystanek Woodstock is undoubtedly the largest music festival in the summer in Poland, attracting up to 400-500,000 people on occasions. It's often described as the biggest open air festival in Europe and was first set up in 1994. The translation is "Woodstock Stop (as in bus or train stop)" and it has moved location around the country over the last few years but has been hosted in the town of Kostrzyn nad Odra for the last 4 years, the town is right on the German border and usually sees a lot of Berliners joining.
Why do so many people come?
Easy, it's free! Organised by Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy (The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity), a charity foundation that usually pay for equipment, operations and tests for ill children, this festival is organised by them as a thanks to the people who supported them earlier in the year (they hold fund-raising concerts around the country on the 2nd Sunday of January)
What can you expect?
Hundreds of thousands of people, major traffic getting there either by road or on cramped trains. Very dusty (if it's hot) or muddy (if it's wet) landscape for camping on, lots of drunk people and a lot of punk, metal, reggae and folk bands.
Who plays there?
Like the majority of festivals, it looks after it's home talent firstly and you can normally expect to see the likes of blues band Dzem, punk bands Armia, reggae bands Daab and metal bands like Acid Drinkers and Vader. Additionally some bands from other countries play. Here is this year's line up:

All in all, not a bad line-up and plenty of genres covered, starting this weekend it's probably a bit late to grab a flight but with the combination of cheap flights to Berlin and Poznan of which neither are more than a 10 euros train journey away and the concert being free, you can't really go wrong! As long as you are not claustrophobic!
