Advantages: Cheaper than premium brands without any loss of quality
Disadvantages: Would be even better with stretchy tabs
I only recently dared to try Tesco own brand nappies - having been taken in by all the advertising of premium brands. I had a bad experience with a cheap brand with my oldest child (now six!) and I stuck with Pampers from then on.
I just wish I'd tried Tesco nappies before! I would have saved a small fortune. (Tesco nappies are much cheaper than Pampers - even though I always stock up on multibuy offers.)
Aside from the price benefits, I haven't noticed any difference in the quality or the performance of Tesco nappies. I've been using the Baby Essentials variety over the past two months so feel that I can finally make a fair comparison.
My baby is just over one year old and at the stage where he's crawling, standing up and taking a few wobbly steps. Basically he's putting any nappy through its paces, as it has to keep up with him! I'm delighted to say that Tesco Baby Essentials haven't given me one leaky nappy since I've been using them. (Okay, so it's the baby that's using them - let's not split hairs!)
Actually, typing this has made me remember one particularly explosive morning poo (sorry if too much info!) that the Tesco nappy couldn't contain. To be fair though, I don't think the Pampers would have dealt with it any better!
My other worry about using a non-branded nappy was whether my baby would suffer any reactions, as they are 'cheaper'. Again, I'm delighted to say that he hasn't had a single episode of nappy rash, soreness or irritation. They don't even leave any red marks where the nappy has been around the tops of the legs.
I feel obliged to offer some criticism so the only thing I could say is that I prefer the nappies I use to have 'stretchy tabs.' It just makes attaching them to a wriggly baby that little bit easier. Nonetheless, they're a good fit, stay in place well and keep my little one dry while he sleeps for a 12 hour stretch (not bragging, honestly!)
The other bonus is that Tesco always send bonus Tesco Clubcard vouchers for their own brand nappies so you can save even more in the long run!
Summary: Well worth trying!
