Abu Dhabi

Description: Abu Dhabi (Arabic: أبو ظبي‎ ʼAbū Ẓabī, literally "Father ... more
Abu Dhabi ... of Gazelle") is the capital of the emirate of the same name, largest of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates. It is said by some to be the richest city in the world and is located in the north central UAE. The city lies on a T-shaped island jutting into the Persian Gulf from the central western coast. An estimated 1.8 million people lived there in 2006, with about an 80% expatriate population. Abu Dhabi city is located at 24.4667° N 54.3667° E. At the head of Abu Dhabi and across from the Corniche is Lulu Island, a semi-natural landmass that is arguably the most strategic and valuable piece of property in the Emirate.

Premium Review Abu Dhabi: Desert Paradise? (1247 words)

I have just seen that the last review written on Abu Dhabi was back in 2001, which frankly is too long ago for people to know what it is like. My parents live out in Abu Dhabi and have done so for the past 2-3 years and I have been visiting there for the last 5 years, and the one thing I have to say is....oh my how it has changed! Okay where do I start with this country, now I personally do not see it as second best to Dubai, as it is much more reserved and less well, Disney I suppose. Abu Dhabi has all the razzmatazz that Dubai, you know the usual flash cars, wealthy Arabs, 5* luxury living and the posh hotels. However, you most likely know this, so now will ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Abu Dhabi: - better than Dubai for a short stopover (246 words)
by - written on 30/05/01 (Useful, 446 readings)

Dubai of course has the biggest this, and the flashiest that. Its also quite expensive, very spread out, and the traffic is a nightmare. Remember the beaches at Jumairah, where most of the holiday hotels are are a good half hours drive form the major shopping centres and the city centre. You can feel a little bit stranded at the Jumairah hotels. What is the alternative...? Try Abu Dhabi, for a short stopover in the Middle East. The beaches are great and only a short 5-10 minute taxi ride away from any hotel. In fact everything is 5-10 minutes away in Abu Dhabi. If you stay at the Abu Dhabi Grand you even have a private beach on Lulu Island. You walk out the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A visitors view of Abu Dhabi (169 words)
by - written on 19/11/00 (Useful, 290 readings)
Rating:

I have had the pleasure to visit Abu Dhabi on several occasions. It is one of the Arab Emerates, Dubai being the most well known. Unlike Dubai, Abu Dhabi is a much nicer city. The roads are less congested, and the shopping is more centralised. Contrary to popular belief, there is no shortage of entertainment of all varieties. There are many nightclubs, bars and discos, and although the local population rarely frequents these type of places, they get very busy with the westerners that work there. Especially on the famous Wednesday night 'Ladies Trail', where ladies do not pay for drinks at all, and there is a sequence of places that must be visited during ...  Read the complete review

Fascinating history Too crowded

World Class friendly people (when not being roused by provocateurs) and walks. Supporters of the Old Order (before May '98) are allegedly causing some problems in parts of Indonesia. There is some lack of faith in the forces of law and order. (You'll be safer in Bali).
