Dubai of course has the biggest this, and the flashiest that. Its also quite expensive, very spread out, and the traffic is a nightmare. Remember the beaches at Jumairah, where most of the holiday hotels are are a good half hours drive form the major shopping centres and the city centre. You can feel a little bit stranded at the Jumairah hotels. What is the alternative...?

Try Abu Dhabi, for a short stopover in the Middle East. The beaches are great and only a short 5-10 minute taxi ride away from any hotel. In fact everything is 5-10 minutes away in Abu Dhabi. If you stay at the Abu Dhabi Grand you even have a private beach on Lulu Island. You walk out the door cross the street and catch a little boat over to the island. Try and stay at one of the seafront hotels on the Corniche. I recommend the Abu Dhabi Grand for five star and the Corniche Hilton for four star. The shops are only a five minute stroll away.

Shopping has just improved with the opening of two malls to rival anything in Dubai. These are the Marina Mall on the Breakwater and the Abu Dhabi Mall in the Tourist Club area.

Make sure you stroll along the Corniche at nght, everyone comes out then to enjoy the cooler evening. Try taking a taxi to the Iranian souk in the port area for souvenirs, but bargain hard!
