Advantages: Very hot in the dry season
Disadvantages: Where do I start?
Went in February 1989 to the Hyatt Regency with Hayes & Jarvis. Probably the best located hotel on the bay. Hotel was average considering the cost at the time and the staff were appalling. Waiters jangled money in their pockets when taking orders, tutted and muttered in Spanish. My sister is fluent and told us they were arguing amongst themselves about who was going to serve the "English anorexics"-we stopped tipping! Nightlife is the same as everywhere else and if you've heard one Mariachi band you've heard them all. Avoid tours they're a rip off. You can get to La Quebrada to see the cliff divers in a taxi which is cheaper. The divers are a must see, but they accost you afterwards for money and are quite aggressive about it. A trip to Roqueta Island on a glass bottom boat is a welcome change, if only to see the beer drinking donkeys. There are loads of beggars, usually very cute 2yr olds who wander up to you with open arms, while their mothers lie crumpled on the pavement, it's difficult to walk past but you must. Food average and Americanised. Look for hotels with private beaches, you'll get hassle on the public beach(much the same as anywhere else) There are lots of water-sports if you want that sort of thing. The only other hotel worth looking at is Las Brisas, where you get your own private pool and pink mini-moke to buzz around in (at a price)I believe lots of couples use this one on their honeymoons. For art, culture, scenery; try the Yucatan penninsular instead. Acapulco is very geared towards the US market. I've been told that it hasn't changed much in recent years.

- 15/10/01 I think the Yucatan peninsula is even more geared to the US market than Acapulco, which is more geared to the yuppies in Mexico City who drive down on the weekends. You're right - it hasn't changed much in years. |

- 24/09/00 Puerto Vallarta is a relatively new resort for us here though, tour operators have only started pushing it about 4 years ago...give it another 10 years! |

- 16/09/00 You should try the less commercial parts of Mexico I found the staff very friendly and very good at their jobs, and extremely grateful for your tipping, this was in Peurto Vallarta and that was in 1998. |
