I visited Albuquerque, New Mexico (hereafter Alb.) in February of 1997. It was a trip to see a friend, not so much a holiday or touristy visit for me, and only a week long (which I regret) but I still managed to see a fair bit of the place. It's a truly beautiful area; much of the white man's development adheres to the traditions of the area. Located in the south west of the United States, Alb is in the desert. If you've watched "Roswell", you will have an idea of the countryside already. It's a very compact city nestling between mountain ranges. It's literally surrounded by mountains on all sides. Albuquerque is the major city of NM, but not the state capital. Its the one you can fly into, but there are no direct flights from the UK, and we had to change at Denver. We stayed in a Comfort Inn on the outskirts of town. This was a bad idea, as they were rebuilding the main highway, and this just about drowned out the hotel. The main things to see are old town, the nuclear museum (v.g.), Sandia Heights, and the petroglyphs. The last two are probably the best things in Albuquerque. Sandia heights is approached by a cable car ride that is brilliant. On top, it is cool, bright with an amazing view. In winter there is a skiing facility.
