Alexandria

Description: Alexandria (Greek: Ἀλεξάνδρεια, Arabic: ... more
Alexandria ... الإسكندرية) is the second-largest city in Egypt, and its largest seaport. Alexandria extends about 20 miles (32 km) along the coast of the Mediterranean sea in north-central Egypt. It is home to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the New Library of Alexandria, and is an important industrial centre because of its natural gas and oil pipelines from Suez.

Newest Review: ... unsuccesful (they tend to give up on the 2nd week), we were fresh meat to the Alexandrians thogh so were hassled quite a bit but not quite to the extent as when someone arrives in Cairo for the first time. Alexandria had a lot of enjoyable markets, a long coastline where it was fun to walk along the rocks or eventually the beach, an absolutely stunning fort, the famous Biblioteca Alexandrina ... more

Premium Review Alexandria: Egypt's second city unfairly overlooked (495 words)
by - written on 20/07/09 (Very useful, 17 readings)

Alexandria is Egypt's 2nd city, small compared to Cairo but still a pretty large city by European standards with a population of over 4 million. The name always stood out for me due to its history as a major Hellenistic city and the trade center between the Nile and Greece. I didn't know what would remain though and had tried to catch a glimpse of what I believed to be it on the flight over from Cyprus but in retrospect probably hadn't got that close. I'd been in Cairo for at least a month and Alexandria was to make a nice little break from the hustle and bustle of the capital. Egyptians can tend to become a bit annoying after a while, so me and a fellow ...  Read the complete review

I’d been in Cairo before, seen most of the tourist sites, and had a few days to kill. Staying with Sudanese friends does tend ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Don't forget Alexandria (651 words)

Despite its amazing history, there is almost nothing left of ancient Alexandria - if you go there hoping to see the sort of remains that can be found in places like Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, you will be sorely disappointed. It is also not exactly what you would call 'beautiful' despite the fact that Egyptians call it the 'Pearl of the Mediterranean' and visit in their millions during the summer. Nevertheless, any visitor to Egypt should not forget Alexandria, for it is a truly wonderful city and full of character. You will probably see more of the 'real' Egypt during a weekend in Alex than a month touring the more famous sites further ...  Read the complete review
