Alexandria is Egypt's 2nd city, small compared to Cairo but still a pretty large city by European standards with a population of over 4 million. The name always stood out for me due to its history as a major Hellenistic city and the trade center between the Nile and Greece. I didn't know what would remain though and had tried to catch a glimpse of what I believed to be it on the flight over from Cyprus but in retrospect probably hadn't got that close. I'd been in Cairo for at least a month and Alexandria was to make a nice little break from the hustle and bustle of the capital. The best travel experiences are those which are not planned meticulously beforehand. If you have no plans, nothing can go against them…if you have no expectations of a place, you won’t be disappointed. My unexpected trip to Alexandria in Egypt falls neatly into this category. Despite its amazing history, there is almost nothing left of ancient Alexandria - if you go there hoping to see the sort of remains that can be found in places like Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, you will be sorely disappointed. It is also not exactly what you would call 'beautiful' despite the fact that Egyptians call it the 'Pearl of the Mediterranean' and visit in their millions during the summer. Nevertheless, any visitor to Egypt should not forget Alexandria, for it is a truly wonderful city and full of character.
