Algiers

Description: Algiers (Arabic: الجزائر, French: Alger) is the capital and largest city of ... more
Algiers ... Algeria and the second in North Africa before Casablanca in Morrocco. Nicknamed al-Bahjah (البهجة) or Alger la Blanche ("Algiers the White") for the glistening white of its buildings as seen rising up from the sea, it is situated on the west side of a bay of the Mediterranean Sea. The city name is derived from the Arabic word al-jazā’ir, which translates as the islands, referring to the four islands which lay off the city's coast until becoming part of the mainland in 1525. Al-jazā’ir is itself a truncated form of the city's older name jazā’ir banī mazghannā, "the islands of (the tribe) Bani Mazghanna", used by early medieval geographers such as al-Idrisi and Yaqut al-Hamawi. Algiers is the only Algerian city with an English name different from its French name. The urban area of Greater Algiers is the largest one in the Maghreb after Greater Casablanca. The modern part of the city is built on the level ground by the seashore and the old part, the ancient city of the deys, climbs the steep hill behind the modern town and is crowned by the casbah or citadel, 400 feet (121.9 m) above the sea. The casbah and the two quays form a triangle.

Algerians are noted for their hospitality and kindness. Most of the 30 million or so people are Sunni Moslems, the Berbers being the biggest ethnic group. Algeria and Algiers have been home to Phoenicians, Romans, Ottoman Turks and the French. Algiers, the capital of Algeria, is a Mediterranean port, set against mountains, and looking onto a large bay. Algiers is a place to wander; a place to soak in the heat and brilliant colours; a place to eat French pastries and sip coffee; a place for intrigue. The medina, or casbah, is sultry, exotic and filled with cafes, mosques, Turkish palaces and bazars. There is also a 16th Century fort. ...  Read the complete review
