Disadvantages: Not for party goers

Alvor is a small town in the Algrave, Portugal. I have just returned from a ten day holiday that I spent with my wife. Now to put my review in context it may be useful to know the following information - I am thirty, my wife twenty seven and we were looking for a holiday that was relaxing and quiet, but not somewhere that was totally dead and had nothing to do. I have to admit that we both found Alvor to be exactly what we were looking for.

Alvor is a great place to relax and chill out. Our hotel was the Yellow Alvor which was mkaybe a five minute walk into the centre of things. It was a pleasant walk as the weather was excellent. We were there in September and the temperature was easily in the thirties during the day.

There are lots of very good restaurants in Alvor and some of the best we found were down by the harbour, where each restaurant had it's own barbeque where they would cook up your dinner in front of your eyes. Prices in the restaurants were no cheaper than at home, probably due to the euro!

There were also plenty of bars - I think we counted 8 Irish pubs, as well as a few karaoke and English bars there were thankfully some Portuguese places! I have to receommend Superbock, what a fantastic beer, very tasty! Prices for beer were not bad, around three euro for a pint. It is definitely not a party town, so I would not receommend it for those looking for a mad holiday, but it suited us.

In the evenings there were plenty of people wandering through the streets and there were the standard little stalls in the streets of people selling their wares to the tourists. It created a very nice atmospehhere in the town.

The beach was magnificent. It is a five minute walk out of the centre of the town, although out hotel ran a shuttle bus there. The beach seemed to run on forever and it was very wide, so there was plenty of space to lie about.

We went to the Slide 'n' Splash water park that was nearby (30 minute bus journey). I would highly recommend it, some brilliant slides and great fun.

All in all I thought Alvor was a great town and would definitely recommend it.

Summary: Great weather, great people, great times!
